Insider news & Analysis in Iran

The state-run Iranian media group, Afkar News, has defended a presidential candidate, Ebrahim Raisi, over his role in the 1988 massacre which killed 30,000 political prisoners.

After News’s statement read: "If Raisi played a role in the execution of the Mujahedins, this issue is actually an advantage for him."

Raisi served on the Death Commission which ordered the death warrants of these men, women, and children, on the orders of then-Supreme Leader Khomeini; effectively he is responsible for a genocide.

The current Iranian Regime has not released Khomeini's decree because it amounts to a crime against humanity (genocide) and could provide the vital proof to try those responsible in the International Criminal Court.

The state-run media released Khomeini's order in desperation, as they tried to defend a murderer.

The fatwa decreed that all members and supporters of the People's Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI/MEK) should be executed if they refused to deny their support for the opposition party.

The Afkar News statement read: "After the decree was issued, a three-member delegation consisting of the representatives of the Prosecuting General, the Ministry of Intelligence, and the legitimate Judge were assigned to investigate the case and carry out the sentence. The legitimate Judge, Hossein Ali Nayeri; the representative of the Ministry of Intelligence, Mostafa Pourmohammadi; the deputy of Tehran Prosecutor, Ebrahim Raisi; and the Judge of Evin Prison, Morteza Eshragh; are those responsible for investigating the case of the Mujahedins in the prison. Moreover, the Chief of the Supreme Court, Mousavi Ardabili, and the Attorney-General of Iran, Mousavi Khou'iniha, also participated in making the decisions.”

Reza Shafiee, a member of Foreign Affairs Committee of the National Council of Resistance of Iran (NCRI), wrote on Forbes: “Ebrahim Raisis and his ilk should not be allowed to escape the consequences of their crimes against humanity. Bringing him to justice will set an example that the U.S. and the rest of the world will not forget.”

However, Afkar News did raise one interesting point. Raisi is not the only member of the Death Commissions to benefit professionally from his role in the massacre. Mostafa Pour-Mohammadi, the current Justice Minister who served on the same Death Commission as Raisi, has claimed to be ‘proud’ of his role in the massacre. Both have exploited their role in the massacre in order to gain political power and enormous wealth.

The President-Elect of the political arm of the Iranian Resistance, the National Council of Resistance of Iran (NCRI), Maryam Rajavi has stressed that the people responsible for this crime against humanity must be tried in the International Criminal Court.

She said that the international community must promote justice and commemorate the martyrs of the Iranian Resistance.
